Word Puzzles (that aren’t Wordle)

I’ve been playing word games my whole life — in my head, not on a screen. Words have shape, taste, texture, volume, disposition! And etymology. Fascinating etymology, in many cases.

Despite my strong connection to letter groups, I’m awful at Scrabble and not at all a digital word-game player. If I was the latter, these would be the games I might play:

Crossword style grid on a grey background, with the word Gisnep as a header and a black and white Moose holding a ship’s steering wheel in the style of the original Mickey Mouse

Gisnep

A daily quote to work out, one letter at a time. Gisnep is a play on how the font used to spell the word Disney, makes it look.

Word Riddles’s probably AI-generated image showing different sized coloured question marks and light bulbs on a dusky mid-blue background

Word Riddle

Solve the riddles online, or sign up for a daily email.

Text on a white background reads Minute Cryptic, The Daily Clue, Solve a clue with a hidden meaning. There’s a button with the word “play”

Minute Cryptic

Ben Oliver told me about Minute Cryptic, a game that’s more of a teaching tool for those of us who would like to (finally) pierce the mystery of cryptic clues.
